Intelligent grab cranes are used in areas where standard hook cranes cannot operate, primarily for handling bulk materials, and are typically custom-built. Unlike general-purpose cranes, grab cranes require the volume of the grab to be specified.

The distinction between an intelligent grab bridge crane and a standard hook bridge crane lies in the installation of a grab beneath the bridge crane's hook. By controlling the opening and closing of the grab, it performs material handling tasks that a hook alone cannot accomplish.

The most common grab configurations in daily operations are clamshell and multi-tine types.

Clamshell grab cranes use the opening and closing of two combined buckets to grasp and load/unload bulk materials. They are primarily used in sand production plants, coal mines, mining operations, and infrastructure construction to handle the grabbing and transport of bulk materials such as sand, gravel, coal powder, coal chunks, earth, stones, and soil. Timber and straw grabs are variants of clamshell grabs. They are employed in lumber mills to handle logs and in straw processing plants to lift straw bales.

Multi-claw grab cranes control material handling through the opening and closing of multiple jaw plates. They are employed in steel mills for scrap metal retrieval and sorting, at waste disposal sites and construction sites for bulk waste handling, sorting, loading, and transport, and at auto recycling facilities for vehicle dismantling, sorting, and recovery. The grab teeth are replaceable and constructed from high-hardness wear-resistant steel to ensure extended service life. Shell types can be selected based on operating conditions: fully enclosed shells, semi-enclosed shells, wide-flange shells, and narrow-flange shells.
