Crane Unit Converter

Use this when drawings, quotations or operating requirements mix metric, US and UK units. It keeps mass, force, length and speed as separate measurements.

Before you start: required inputs
  • Read the full original unit, including whether a “ton” is metric, US short or UK long.
  • For speeds, check the time basis: metres per minute and metres per second differ by a factor of 60.

METRIC ↔ IMPERIALMASS · FORCE · LENGTH · SPEED
A metric tonne, US short ton and UK long ton are three different mass units.
Choose what the source quantity measures. A load stated in kg is mass; a structural reaction in kN is force.
The numerical quantity on the source drawing or specification, before conversion.
The source unit written beside that number. Select the specific type of ton where applicable.
The unit required by the receiving drawing, supplier or calculation.
A PRACTICAL WALKTHROUGH

How to use this calculator

01

Choose the measurement

Select mass, force, length or speed. The tool only converts within that measurement group.

02

Match the source record

Select the source unit, enter its numerical value and select the required output unit.

03

Copy the number with its unit

Read the conversion, then save or copy both the value and its full unit into your specification.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Specify a metric-tonne load in kilograms

THE INPUTS

Measurement mass; value 5; from metric t; to kg.

THE RESULT

5 metric tonnes = 5,000 kg. This is not the same as 5 US short tons or 5 UK long tons.

MAKE SENSE OF THE NUMBERS

What does the result mean?

01

Changing the measurement group loads a fresh 1-unit example; review it before using the result.

02

A unit change within the same measurement group preserves the equivalent quantity. Swap reverses the conversion direction.

03

Displayed values are rounded. The conversion uses the defined conversion factors rather than a rounded mental shortcut.

Watch for this

Treating kN as a mass unit or treating an unspecified “ton” as a metric tonne. Clarify the source unit first.

Formula & model conditions +

Converted value = input × source-unit factor / target-unit factor

1 metric t = 1,000 kg; 1 US short ton = 907.18474 kg; 1 UK long ton = 1,016.0469088 kg

  • Convert within the selected measurement only. Mass and force are separate quantities.
  • Changing measurement loads a new one-unit example. Changing a source unit preserves the physical quantity.
  • Calculations retain numeric precision; display values are rounded.

Common questions

Can I convert kg directly into kN here?

No. Mass and force are different measurements. The total lifting load tool can show static gravity force using standard gravity.

What is the difference between the three types of ton?

One metric tonne is 1,000 kg; one US short ton is 2,000 lb; one UK long ton is 2,240 lb. The converter labels them separately.
