Crane Cycle Energy & Operating Cost Calculator

Build a transparent electricity-use estimate from measured or proposed crane operating stages and an entered USD tariff.

Project planningWorked example includedFree to use
Before you start: required inputs
  • Obtain average electrical input power and duration for the hoisting, travel and other stages of one representative cycle.
  • Record expected daily cycles, annual operating days and the energy tariff in USD/kWh.
1

Enter your values

Example values loaded
kW
Average total electrical supply power allocated to the hoisting stage, from a meter or an electrical energy model.
s
Duration of that hoisting stage in one representative cycle.
kW
Average electrical supply power allocated to the travel stage; account for overlaps consistently.
s
Duration allocated to travel in that same representative cycle.
kW
Average electrical power for the remaining modeled stage, such as controls or standby equipment.
s
Duration allocated to that other stage per cycle.
cycles
Expected complete repetitions of the modeled cycle on one operating day.
days
Number of days on which the modeled daily operating schedule occurs.
USD/kWh
Energy-only electricity charge in US dollars per kWh; convert the tariff to USD before use.
A PRACTICAL WALKTHROUGH

How to use this calculator

01

Break down one cycle

Allocate electrical input power and time to each stage. Avoid counting simultaneous total supply power twice.

02

Set annual use

Use representative cycles per operating day and the expected number of operating days.

03

Review energy and cost

Compare per-cycle, daily and annual energy. The USD result uses only the entered electricity tariff.

WORKED EXAMPLE

100 cycles per day, 250 days per year

THE INPUTS

12 kW for 60 s hoisting, 5 kW for 40 s travel and 0.5 kW for 20 s other time; 100 cycles/day, 250 days/year and USD 0.12/kWh.

THE RESULT

Each cycle uses about 0.2583 kWh. Annual use is about 6,458.33 kWh, costing USD 775 at the entered tariff.

MAKE SENSE OF THE NUMBERS

What does the result mean?

01

Stage power must be electrical supply input if you want an electricity-use result.

02

The model scales a representative cycle linearly with the entered operating schedule.

03

Regeneration, demand charges, tax, maintenance and changing tariffs are not added automatically.

Watch for this

Using motor nameplate mechanical output as average electrical input, or treating peak power as the average for the entire stage.

Formula & model conditions +

E_cycle = Σ(P_electrical × t) / 3,600

E_year = E_cycle × cycles/day × days/year

Cost = E × entered USD/kWh

  • The entered stage energy totals are added. Avoid counting simultaneous total supply power twice.
  • No regeneration, demand charge, power-factor charge, tax, battery loss or maintenance cost is inferred.
  • USD values are electricity operating-cost estimates at the entered tariff.

Common questions

How do I include lowering or another stage?

Include its electrical energy consistently within one of the entered stage totals. For more detailed cycles, sum the stage energies separately before comparing the total.

Does the cost include maintenance or demand charges?

No. It is electricity energy multiplied by the entered USD/kWh tariff.
