FOUR-ROPE / BULK MATERIAL

Four-Rope Clamshell Grab Bucket

Load loose bulk material with separate supporting and closing ropes. A four-rope clamshell grab is selected together with its crane or hoist arrangement: the ropes, bucket volume, grab self-weight and maximum material load must all fit the lifting system. Send the cargo density and your pickup and discharge geometry before choosing a model.

01 / SPECIFICATIONS

Compare complete four-rope grab configurations.

Each example keeps bucket volume, material density, material mass and crane rating together. Compare complete configurations; figures from different rows must not be combined for one grab.

ModelCrane ratingBucket volumeMaterial densityListed material per grabRope / close time
U35 t2.5 m³>0.5 to 1 t/m³1.25–2.5 tØ14 mm / 8 s

UP109510 t9.5 m³0.63 t/m³5.9 tØ20–24 mm / confirm cycle

The material figure is cargo inside the bucket, not grab self-weight. The selected crane must carry the grab plus the maximum cargo and applicable rigging. Confirm grab mass, rope layout, open width, dimensions and duty on the approved unit drawing.

Rope and outline data for these configurations

H and D are outline labels. Use the approved unit drawing for installation clearances, opening width and building work.

Will a 5 t crane lift 5 t of material in a grab?

No. The grab itself consumes part of the crane's capacity. For each proposed bucket, add its confirmed self-weight to the maximum expected cargo mass, then check the total against the crane and rope arrangement at the actual duty.

02 / APPLICATIONS

Built around the material and discharge cycle.

01

Coal and grain receiving

Choose shell shape and bucket volume from bulk density and expected filling. Include dust control, hopper opening and discharge clearance in the layout.

02

Ore and dense aggregate

A smaller bucket may already reach the allowed lifted mass. Check lump size, wear protection, closing force and the total suspended load.

03

Stockpile to hopper transfer

Set the required tonnes per hour against travel distance, lift height, close/open time and real operating hours. A larger nominal bucket does not guarantee a faster plant cycle.

A four-rope bucket needs a crane arrangement that can operate its support and closing functions; replacing a plain hook is not enough. For a complete crane, compare the site's grab overhead crane range. Compare the matching crane system.

03 / CONFIGURATION

Choose the attachment around the actual lift.

Choose bucket volume, shell profile and four-rope rigging together for the cargo density, lump size and required cycle rate. The selected drawing should state grab self-weight, maximum filled load, rope paths and pickup-to-discharge clearances.

01 / CARGO AND CAPACITY

Size for the heaviest real grab load

Use measured bulk density and fill behaviour to calculate maximum material mass; obtain the selected grab self-weight before approving crane capacity.

  • Density and moisture
  • Maximum filled material mass
  • Grab plus cargo load
02 / ROPE SYSTEM

Match the existing or new crane

Confirm supporting and closing rope paths, rope diameter, reeving, drum travel and sheave arrangement together.

  • Support/close rope functions
  • Rope and sheave dimensions
  • Lift and closing travel
03 / SHELL AND WEAR

Fit the material and hopper

Select shell profile, teeth or edges, opening width and wear parts for the particle size and abrasion level.

  • Loose or compact material
  • Lump size and wear
  • Open width and discharge envelope
04 / OPERATING CYCLE

Check productivity at your site

Compare actual lift, crane travel, discharge and return times with the desired tonnes per hour and duty class.

  • Cycles per hour
  • Stockpile and hopper geometry
  • Maintenance access

Ask each supplier to quote the same material, crane interface, operating cycle and delivery boundary for a meaningful comparison.

04 / QUOTATION SCOPE

Compare a complete attachment package.

Equipment price, crane modifications and site services should be separated so your team knows what is supplied and what remains to be done locally.

01

Bucket and mechanical package

Identify the selected shells, cutting edges, rope head, sheaves and wear components. State the actual grab self-weight and open/closed dimensions.

02

Crane and rope interface

List rope diameter, support/closing arrangement, reeving, hook or head connection, allowable lift height and control responsibilities.

03

Inspection and site work

Set out drawings, factory checks, packing, spare parts, commissioning support and the tests required at the destination.

05 / ORDERING & DELIVERY

Approve the selected unit before manufacture.

The offer should connect your load data to one drawing, one equipment schedule and a clear inspection and handover plan. Production and freight dates are confirmed for that selected configuration.

Request these documents with the offer

  • Selected grab general arrangement with open and closed dimensions
  • Grab self-weight and maximum permitted material load
  • Rope diameter, reeving and support/closing arrangement
  • Material and wear-parts schedule
  • Agreed inspection and test record list
  • Operating, maintenance and spare-parts information

List the destination standards and customer witness points before finalising the acceptance plan.

  1. 01

    Application review

Confirm load, crane interface, environment, operating sequence and buyer requirements.

  2. 02

Record the final model, serial number and wear parts so replacement components fit the supplied configuration.

07 / BUYER QUESTIONS

Questions to settle before buying.

Use these answers to prepare one technical and commercial brief for the selected unit.

Discuss this attachment
How do I choose between U3, U115 and UP1095?

Start with measured cargo density and the tonnes needed per cycle. Compare the complete model rows, then verify grab self-weight, crane rating, rope arrangement and hopper clearances on a selected-unit drawing.

Can I use this bucket on an existing hook crane?

Only after the lifting, support and closing functions are engineered. Provide the crane's hoist and rope drawings; a hook rating alone does not establish four-rope compatibility.

Does nominal 9.5 m³ mean 9.5 t per lift?

No. The listed UP1095 example pairs 9.5 m³ with 0.63 t/m³ material and 5.9 t cargo. Actual fill and material density must be checked for the project.

Which measurements do you need before quotation?

Send the existing crane rating, rope dimensions, lift height, stockpile and hopper drawings, available open width, material density and desired throughput.

Can one bucket serve several materials?

Possibly, but each cargo changes fill, load and wear. List every material and its density range so the heaviest and most abrasive operating cases can be checked.
